Varsity Disposable Fountain Pen, Medium Point, Black Barrel/Black Ink PIL90010 Review

Varsity Disposable Fountain Pen, Medium Point, Black Barrel/Black Ink PIL90010
Average Reviews:

I picked up a couple Varsity pens as a lark a few weeks ago. When I removed the pen from its packaging, I immediatly noticed how light the pen is. I personally am a fan of light pens. Heavy ones may seem impressive when capped, but I find them suboptimal for actual use; they drag your pocket down and cause hand fatigue after long use, or even moderate use if the pen is not perfectly balanced. Much of the point of writing with a fountain pen, to me anyway, is their ease and expressiveness.
When I posted the cap and took the pen for a spin, I was shocked! Frankly, I was expecting a scratchy, skippy horrorshow of a writing experience. Instead, I was treated to a smooth, reasonably expressive line of dark black. The point could be a bit finer. It's marked 'M', and advertised as "fine", which is reasonably accurate, as Pilot nibs seem to run to the fine side.
My only real gripe with the pen itself is that the "clip" is quite nearly worthless. The ink window may or may not be worthless, as well ... either that, or the ink capacity is exceptional. Granted, though the pen has seen daily use, it hasn't been *heavily* used, because of the one serious gripe I have.
The ink, though dark and reasonably quick drying, isn't even permanent enough to address envelopes, let alone write anything really important. I would especially caution against writing any checks using this pen! Granted, the vast majority of fountain pen ink is about as waterproof as tissue. None the less, given that the pen is not refillable (not withstanding the hacks some have attempted), it would have been nice for Pilot to use a more durable ink.
Finally, I can't help but comment on te inDUHvidual below who gave the very low review because "they are tipped with Pilot's trademark rollerball". This makes it clear (as if the rest of the review did not) that this person has absolutely no clue about fountain pens. Virtually all fountain pens have a small steel ball welded to the nib. This happens before the nib is split, so the "ball" is actually two halves. On a cheap steel tip like the Varsity, it's not such a big deal -- it basically makes it easier to create a smooth writing pen. But on a gold tipped pen (as most are over $150 or so), it's vital, or the point would wear in no time.

Noodlers Ink Fountain Pen, Piston Fill, CLEAR DEMO Review

Noodlers Ink Fountain Pen, Piston Fill, CLEAR DEMO
Average Reviews:

Just got this pen a few days ago. Pleasantly surprised by the quality -- Noodlers lives up to its name. A great choice for anyone who is looking for the ink capacity of a piston filler, but doesn't want to carry around an expensive pen everyday. Filling mechanism is as smooth as either Lamy or Pelikan. Nib is a bit of thick fine (medium-fine.) Very happy overall. If you're looking for something in the Lamy Safari range that has a bit more classic look, integrated fill mechanism, and a bit smaller and lighter this is a fine choice.

Pelikan 4001 Ink Turquoise 62.5ml/2oz Review

Pelikan 4001 Ink Turquoise 62.5ml/2oz

Pelikan makes my favorite inks; both the colors and inks are my ideal. I like a lot of other inks for the color varity: Noodler's, Sheaffer Skrip, Lamy, Private Reserve, Monteverde, Preppy, yet Pelikan remains my favorite particularly in pens that struggle with other inks. The ink writes smoothly, the colors are vibrant, and the shading is noticable. If you like to see shading in your handwriting, you need to try a bottle of Pelikan! My favorites are Royal Blue and Turquoise.

BIC Soft Feel Retractable Ballpoint Pen, Medium Point, Black, 12-Count Review

BIC Soft Feel Retractable Ballpoint Pen, Medium Point, Black, 12-Count
Average Reviews:

I'm a cheap pen addict. I've been through all the gels, the Space pen, and some fountain pens. I keep coming back to the humble ballpoint because it simply lasts longer and seems more durable in day-to-day use. It's the one type of pen that can write on any type of paper (shiny, porous, etc.) without worry.
I had the chance to try a Bic retractable pen a while back. It was emblazoned with some pharmacy's name but I was impressed with its performance. I use black ink exclusively and, in the cheap pen market, a good black pen is really hard to find. Up until now, it was the Fisher Space pen - but it's far from perfect. The Space pen often quits before fully exhausting the reservoir. I compare that with my Bic Crystal experiences from when I was a child. I would hang onto one of those until the barrel was completely clear - all its ink expelled in use. Anyway, back to the pen at hand here.
I picked up a 12 pack of Bic Soft Feel Retractable pens from a local Walgreens. I haven't seen them being sold in quantities less than that. Even at a dozen, they were only about $7 - a little over fifty cents a pen. The barrel isn't clear so you'll never know when you're out of ink but the soft feel is exquisite. The click top is a simple (read "cheap") piece of black plastic but it's functional and resounds with a satisfying "click" when you use it. Further down the barrel is a slightly wider barrel wrap - also soft feeling. The pen is feather-light and well balanced and the line it lays is as pitch-black as the Space pen (a $25 pen). Making loops with this Bic shows almost zero gapping in the line - actually performing better than the Space pen. All this in a pen I can give away to someone on the bus (because I keep half a dozen in my backpack). I highly recommend this pen and will be picking up a 12 pack of blue ones for my wife (since she prefers blue to black).

Noodler's Apache Sunset Fountain Pen Ink Review

Lovely gold with reddish shading. Smooth. I have used it in a fine nib Sheaffer and a wet (wider) Waterman. The shading shows better with the heavier line. Noodler's is a fine, safe (pH balanced) ink. This color is not "waterproof" and cleans up easily.

Noodlers Ink Fountain Pen, Piston Fill, Navy Blue Review

Noodlers Ink Fountain Pen, Piston Fill, Navy Blue

I bought this pen because of the mandarin yellow colo, since I don't want to choose between the Parker duofold and rent and utilities. It's enjoyable to write with, and a real bargain.
Back in the late 70s, you could buy a Sheaffer fountain pen for 5 bucks or so, write the heck out of it, and buy another. This pen reminds me of those days.

Noodlers Ink Fountain Pen, Piston Fill, Turquoise Review

Noodlers Ink Fountain Pen, Piston Fill, Turquoise
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I heartily salute this pen, which embodies everything that inexpensive fountain pens used to be, but this one was made to much more demanding specs. It doesn't drip, at all. It doesn't let out great blobs of ink. Its reservoir is large enough that you won't have to refill very frequently, and it even stays ready to write when left uncapped for 15-20 minutes or more.
The installed nib is quite stiff, and not prone to much play, so if you enjoy signing things with a flourish, it will take some fiddling. (Or a second fountain pen with a broader nib.)
However, as a workaday fountain pen, there is none better. Do yourself a favor, and pick one up today.
