Cross Apogee, Titian Red Lacquer, Fountain Pen, with Rhodium Plated 18 Karat Solid Gold Nib Medium (AT0126-3MD) Review

Cross Apogee, Titian Red Lacquer, Fountain Pen, with Rhodium Plated 18 Karat Solid Gold Nib Medium (AT0126-3MD)

I purchased the pen and began using it and was quickly disappointed. Shortly after I began using it the pen began leaking everywhere. I could do very little without getting ink on what I was working on or my hands. Since this seemed like a manufacturing problem I sent it back to Cross. I called 2 weeks later to inquire about the pen and was rudely told that it would be 6 weeks before I could expect any information and that surely the pen had not been even looked at yet. I found this rather disappointing because I am a brand new customer who purchased a pen that was faulty from the start.

I have used this pen for the last 6 years. I think I bought it when they first came out. The way it feels in your hand, the way it smoothly glides on the paper, ANY kind of paper. I highly recommend this pen as the first purchase or gift purchase. It is a great starter pen for a fountain pen collection. You will never regret the purchase.

Cross ATX Matte Chrome Fine Point Fountain Pen - 886-1FS Review

Cross ATX Matte Chrome Fine Point Fountain Pen - 886-1FS

The Cross ATX fountain pen is a basic but terrific pen for everyday use. I've had mine for a year now and have had no problems with ink flow or leakage. The line width is slightly wider than one might think (I recommend a fine nib), but it's a great bold writer with a good weight balance in the hand. One of my favorites.

I purchased this pen for someone who was going to job interviews to help him look professional but had to order another one for him because once I tried it, it became my most-used pen. I have many Parker, Aurora and other fine pens but keep selecting this one. It's comfortable to hold, the medium refill flows and it's handsome to look at.

Waterman Carene Amber Shimmer Fine Point Fountain Pen - 11104W2 Review

Waterman Carene Amber Shimmer Fine Point Fountain Pen - 11104W2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'd been thinking about acquiring this model for nearly a year. Obviously, my expectations for this model were extremely high. This pen actually meets and exceeds my expectations in every respect.
The pen is an excellent writer with a flexible enough nib to produce very nice letters, and even allows me to open up some of the loops with my rather small hand writing. Of course, using a fountain pen competently requires one to slow down and write with care and deliberation. The Carene is no exception. One must be attentive, but the result is generally better penmanship.
As with all of my other Waterman fountain pens, I employ the converter and use only Waterman's blue-black ink. The combination of ink and fine nib is excellent on most stationary, writing tablets, and even my generally too smooth journal pages.
The pen is aesthetically wonderful. I prefer the Waterman Charleston's lines more, but this pen is still gorgeous, and I think the amber shimmer is the best design. I've also seen other color schemes for this pen and I think they are all attractive. This is a marriage of beauty and excellent design that creates a fountain pen masterpiece.
The design incorporates a bit more weight than I had thought it would, but the pen is superbly balanced and a pleasure to write with for extended periods of time. In fact, I wish I could write this review using the Carene rather than this keyboard.
A word about the price and delivery of this product. The current price of about $192.00 including shipping is certainly better than other prices I have seen on line and in boutiques. The delivery time was also much faster than originally scheduled and that pleases me.

I got this pen for my boss for Christmas. It seems like a very nice pen. It writes smoothly and appears to be made of heavy, high quality materials. It has a professional appearance. The wider barrell and appearance of this pen make it a nice choice for the professional business man.

Waterman Charleston Black GT Fine Point Fountain Pen - 30046 Review

Waterman Charleston Black GT Fine Point Fountain Pen - 30046
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In this price range you would be hard pressed to find a pen costing hundreds more that writes better. It's a beautiful pen and as with all Waterman pens I have yet to own one that had to be returned due to scratching. I own both the black and Ivory and have to tell you everyone falls in love with the Ivory, it's different, it's color is unique and the gold appointments puts it in a class of its own. I still long for the day I can bring myself to purchase the Montblanc Le Grand 149 for $700. LOL, that's a lot of money for a pen.
As with any fountain pen it's important to note the longer you write with it the better it performs as the point conforms to your writing technique and remember it's not a good idea to let another use your pen. I've always believed nothing writes as well as a fountain pen and it's a shame we're not permitted at work to use them for legal signatures. Dohhh! If the cartridge that draws the ink should go, simply wrap the threads with plumbers silicone tape and fill the entire barrel up with ink. That worked great with an older Japanese fountain pen, refilling is rare, LOL.

Waterman Carene Royal Blue Fine Point Fountain Pen - 41416 Review

Waterman Carene Royal Blue Fine Point Fountain Pen - 41416
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Background you can skip
I am obsessed with certain items. Watches, fountain pens and cameras. In my fountain pen collection I own a reasonable variety of well known brands:
Pelikan
Waterman
Montblanc
Parker
Cross
Shaeffer
Lamy
Waterford
Namiki
so that gives me a background to compare against. I like broad nibs the best but medium does just fine (no pun intended) for me as well as broad nibs are not always available. My writing style is that I have 'wild' swings in my writing, almost like when someone jots down a signature: forceful, fast and with swings. the other quirk is that I hold the pens slightly rotated off center. Keep this in mind when reading this review as it complicates matters for the pen a bit.
I will not go into the other brands on here but solaly focus on the Carene. I own it with a medium nib, this exact model.
About the Waterman Carene Medium nib
Size: I would call this a standard size. It is well suited for a 6' person, does not look flimsy in the hand. It might be a tad large for women but certainly not noticeable uunless you have someone like me looking at it.

Weight: this pen is relatively lightweight. The metal is light in the hand but not so light that all the writing pressure on the tip has to come from your hand. The pen has just enough weight on its own.
Balance: given the lightness of the metal the pen can be used with the cap stuck on the back without significantly altering the balance. This is important for me as I have made that a habit over the years.
Material: it appears to be a very light metal. I'd guess it is aluminum. The black front piece is a composite, much like Montblanc uses for it whole pens. The trim is silver as is the nib.
Styling: this is where the Carene really hits the home run. This pen attracts lots of "oohs and Aaaahs" and people want to hold it. Its Azure blue and silver abd black color scheme is unique and looks extremely rich. Its smooth timeless lines can be perceived as modern or minimalist. Nothing overdone on this pen and I just love it. The nib is wedged in with a bow. Look closely at the pics. Very very beautiful design!!!
Most importantly, handling: This pen has a little bit of trouble keeping up with my writing style. It sometimes fails to ink fast swings when using regular ink and requires a bit more pressire than I prefer to get the ink to flow. Since the nib is wide and short, it does not have a whole lot of flexibility so when you write sllightly tilted like me you might have to sometimes correct missing lines in your writing. Also, given the little extra pressure needed when writing I cannot use it without getting a little tired in the hands.
Conclusion: not my preferred daily writer but a gorgeous piece of functional jewelry that can be used for regular work needs. Not something you'd write a few pages in a letter with given the less forgiving nature of its design. For the price I think this is an excellent deal but look around carefully as there are big discrepancies in price online. Mine was sub 200.

Waterman Carene Deluxe Blue Lacquer Fine Point Fountain Pen - 11202W2 Review

Waterman Carene Deluxe Blue Lacquer Fine Point Fountain Pen - 11202W2
Average Reviews:

This is a very nice writing instrument. It feels good in your hand, not too light or heavy, not too thin or thick. The ink flows easily, but not too much that you need to wait for it to dry. I'm a left handed writer, so I tend to trace my hand over what I just wrote, and with other fountain pens, I've ended up with ink all over my ring and pinky fingers. But, not with this pen. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star is because I hate paying this much money for a pen. If you can afford it, I recommend this pen over similarly priced fountain pens.

I love this pen. It is very stylish and writes very well. I use this pen for business and clients are impressed with the look of the pen. It has the look and feel of a pen that is much more expensive, but at the price here, it can't be beat. The refills for the ceramic rollerball can be a little difficult to find, but I use Schmidt rollerball refills and I love them. Again, this is one of the smoothest writing instruments around.
