Mont Blanc Generation Ballpoint Pen, Black (M13419) Review

Mont Blanc Generation Ballpoint Pen, Black (M13419)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This pen (with silver accents) is one of more than 50 ballpoints (non-disposable) I own. It is probably my favorite for wearing in a dress shirt pocket because it's relatively light (but not flimsy), not too thick (but not nearly as slim as an old-style Cross, which I hate), and the clip goes all the way to the top of the pen, so it doesn't stick up and out of your pocket, which I think makes one look like an engineering student.
If you buy one, note your, or your intended recipient's, preference for belt buckle, cuff links, etc. when selecting silver or gold-tone.
It is not a knockoff, but fans of heavier MBs might be disappointed. I have an original style Meisterstruck ballpoint that I bought in the early 1980s (the newer ones look a little more cheaply made to me today). The Generation is noticebly lighter than the old Meisterstruck, but not so much so as to bother me.
You should know that in the past the Generation has been available for corporations to put their logos on. In fact, some company years ago that I had business with gave me a blue one with its logo on the barrel. I liked the pen very much, but not the logo, so I gave it away and bought my own black Generation without promotional labeling.
The price I see Amazon asking for the Generation today (5/22/11) is about twice what I paid for mine, if I remember correctly, and twice what anyone else should pay. The pens in my collection probably range in price (full retail) from about $50 to about $500 each. However, I paid far less than retail for each of them by carefully shopping the internet and ordering from a wide variety of reputable vendors. Yes, I am confident that none of them are knockoffs.
One more note about the MB, I find their ballpoint ink to be about the blackest I've experienced. It does seem to be a bit thicker than that in Parker and Sheaffer refills. I generally buy mediums. Parker is probably my favorite as it's less prone to clumping on the page than MB. I love Lamy pens, but their medium points need a good breaking-in before they'll draw a satisfying line; that's why I buy their refills in broad.

Cross Classic Century, Lustrous Chrome, Ballpoint Pen (3502) Review

Cross Classic Century, Lustrous Chrome, Ballpoint Pen (3502)
Average Reviews:

Before you buy, be sure to check where the pen was made. I have a number of older Cross pens that say "USA" near the top, and they are great pens. However, I have bought three different ones in the past few years that do not indicate where they were made, and they are of inferior quality. The top and bottom halves are loose, and have to be carefully manipulated to come together without a gap. The first one I got, I sent it back to Cross for warranty repair under their "lifetime guarantee," only to receive it back unchanged telling me that it was just fine - and a "handling fee" attached.
I was willing to believe it was simply an anomaly, one bad pen. So later on when some new colors came out, I bought two more - only to see that they have the same quality defect.
My advice: if you want a good Cross pen, go to the secondhand store and buy one that was made in USA. They aren't making them the same anymore.

Cross ATX, Basalt Black, Ballpoint Pen, with Chrome Plated Appointments (882-3) Review

This pen is simply about as good as a writing instrument can get. The weight, balance and feel are perfect. The outside is coated with a finely textured surface that feels great and acts to keep the pen firmly in your hand while writing. The mechanical actions is as you would expect from Cross, excellent. It is also not that "fat" around. It is slightly larger than a typical slim pen but nothing like the real "fat-boys" out there.

Some pens are fat, some are thin, and most people have a preference.
If you like a fat pen, this handsome black-and-chrome item is a good candidate.
It's satisfyingly heavy and reasonably well balanced. I think Cross does a great job with satin black finishes and the generous chrome appointments give this pen a bold appearance without becoming gauche.
Writing quality is good, though you can find better at a higher price.
Consider this pen the Audi A6 of writing instruments, an entry-level luxury that may not compete with the Mercedes but is certainly fun to drive.

For all the thousands of pens available this pen is by far the best value for the dollar. Simple, elegant, inexpensive and no pen cap to lose. My recommendation: buy more than one and give the extra pens to the people who sit next to you at the office. They will thank you.
