They have been a mix of ballpoint, rollerball, and fountain pens by the likes of Mont Blanc, Lamy, Waterman, and others. This is my first S.T. Dupont pen and I must say that I am quite pleased.
For me the most important elements of a good fountain pen are the quality and smoothness of the writing (the nib) and the consistency of the ink flow (combination of nib and ink delivery system). I don't want leaks or pooling ink at the nib, nor do I expect to see skipping or inconsistent ink flow. In essence I want it to act like a good rollerball or ballpoint, but with the unique image disposition on paper that only a good fountain pen can deliver.
On each count this pen has exceeded my expectations. The smoothness is superb, the flow consistent, and the feel in the hand is quite balanced and steady. It's a joy to write with and a joy to look at. As someone else I know described it, this pen is a mix of the modern and the classic. The carbon fiber and polished palladium exemplify its modern heritage while its fountain pen delivery system are firmly rooted in classic writing tradition.
In summary, I am highly pleased with my purchase and it will be joyfully added to my collection of other fine writing instruments....when it isn't being carried with me for my daily writing pleasure.
