I have had a few nice pens in my 40-some years of life, some in the [...] dollar range, and I am an engineer and businessman. My review is based on my experience writing with this pen as well as some other pens that I own and collect. First, please accept that a pen is very similar to owning a watch. You can own a Rolex, a Patek Philippe, or you may have a Seiko with completely different ranges of prices. The Cross Townsend ballpoint pen definitely has one of the nicest feelings for a Ballpoint pen, writes very easily (much easier and nicer compared to a BIC or Papermate - no comparison). The weight is perfect, about the same or maybe lighter than a Parker Urban, and not too light (like the thinner Cross pens). The technology has not changed in ballpoint pens in years, but inks as well as the metal-making processes have improved as have other things. Consider that I own a high caliber Mont Blanc pen, other Cross pens (silver and gold plated versions), and have a few different Parker Urban (retractable) and Parker Jotter pens. In comparison the Townsend writes better, but you can't hold the pen at a low angle as you can with some of the Parker pens. This seems to ve pretty standard with Cross pens overall. But I didn't mind spending a few extra bucks to buy the Cross Townsend. Now the reason why I took off points is because I wanted a functional pen that also looks classy at work but writes impeccably. So this pen did the trick, but considering I could have bought more 3 Parker Urban's for the same price, I can't give the Townsend full points. Another issue is that the clip on the Townsend looks like any other pen. I have seen 20 dollar Cross pens at Sams Club with much nicer clips. A third but less minor issue is that this pen is retractable (which I love - I can't stand capped pens) but I find myself keeping to readjust the pen so that the tip is extended the most - it seems to slip back inside after a while. I've had the pen for just a week now and I am started to get frustrated. I got this pen with the highest expectations and never thought that I would be disappointed in these things. So, price, clip, and retraction. I will keep this pen just because I collect pens but I have to say that I miss the simplicity and functionality of a Parker Urban, which you should be able to find one for about $20 in Amazon. I have not had a issue with the Parker Urban's pens and the quality and functionality is not much different. Happy shoppings :-)
