I bought this ink to use in a Sheaffer pen a friend gave me, it has a medium nib that is plated.
This is my first fountain pen and I was excited to use it, but it had no ink left. I went to a few office supply stores and found absolutely no bottled ink, and very few cartridges. I picked up some Pilot Varsity pens(disposable Fountain Pens) to play with while I waited for ink.
I looked around and found Noodler's Ink. It looked to be a brand of high quality and pride in their product, as well as boasting quite a few features.
From their website:
"Bulletproof" refers to any Noodler's Ink that resists all the known tools of a forger, UV light, UV light wands, bleaches, alcohols, solvents, petrochemicals, oven cleaners, carpet cleaners, carpet stain lifters, and of course...they are also waterproof once permitted to dry upon cellulose paper.
As well as being just about unfreezable. The product comes in a beautiful glass bottle that is heavy and thick. Upon opening the box I was surprised to see a free fountain pen! I thought maybe it was a tester pen or something that would not hold much ink. I was wrong, the entire barrel is fill-able by dropper and it looks pretty cool with the blue ink in it. Also included is a small paper explaining how to fill the pen and another paper explaining the advantages of bottled ink(they came up with $1.66 per pen and 76 of those pens making up a 4.5oz bottle equaling $126.16 versus a $15 bottle of ink)
I filled my Sheaffer and went at it.
Writing on cheap-o notebook paper first I noticed some feathering and the color was unexpected. The color is not bright, it is more of a slate blue, however I think it looks amazing. I then wrote on printer paper and there was much less feathering, it really only happened when I wrote slow. On 20lb copy paper there was very little to no feathering and the color looks a little deeper and dries a little darker.
Then I used the included pen, even on the cheap paper there was no feathering and the writing stayed tight. And to think, I wasn't going to waste the ink filling the thing up!
I see absolutely no break in flow, there is a huge writing difference over the Pilot Varsity. It is smooth, clear, and consistent. On notebook paper I could probably not use the other side of the paper after writing with this ink, it showed through just a little too much.Pros:
Unfreezable(well almost)
Forgery-proof
Long lasting(through water, time, uv, ect)
Free (awesome)pen
Smooth and consistent flow
Dries quickly
Cost effective vs cartridges or disposable pens
Cons:
May feather depending on nib and paper combo
Shows through to other side of most paper
Things to Keep in Mind:
The bottle has a dropper on the lid, be prepared to have a place to put it when you fill up pens that don't need it
This is not a traditional blue, it dries lighter and is more of a "Slate Blue"I am very impressed, I will definitely buy from noodlers again(and again and again and again...)
The features are amazing, it slows smooth, and there is a huge selection of colors.
